The expression health-care is the provision of medical services plus the general prevention and management of sickness using professional medical resources. Although The World Health Organization would like to see the expression extended to include all people whether an individual or whole populations. Jointly, this provision of medical facilities would be known as a health care system.
The term health care has not always been used though and prior to this is it was often just referred to medicine or the health sector but this was used more by English speaking nations. In most developed nations and many developing nations health care is provided to everyone regardless of their ability to pay. It was the UK that pioneered the first population based health care system back in 1948 called The National Health Service run by each consecutive administration.
Alternatively a system of compulsory administration funded health insurance with nominal fees can be provided, as with Italy, which, according to The World Health Organization, has the second-best health system in the world. Canada and Australia have both begun similar systems and have been running since almost twenty and the 1970’s respectively both going by the name of Medicare. Nonetheless, these systems of health care where everyone benefits from a government based service contrast starkly with those in America where almost all health care is paid for through the provision of insurance schemes or privately. The healthcare industry is considered a profession which makes use of the skills of professional healthcare workers who provide a service related to the preservation or improvement of the health of people who are injured, sick, disabled, or infirm.
Worldwide, over recent decades, there has been a huge increase in the sum of money spent on health care and it is now one of the fastest growing sectors in every developed country with an average cost of 10 percent of the gross domestic product. Although in 2003 the healthcare costs paid to across the entire health care system, consumed 15.3 percent of the GDP of The USA, the biggest of any country in the world and is expected to reach almost twenty percent of GDP by 2016.
This fact is highlighted by the large number of American citizens who have serious concerns about their health care, around 180 million to be precise, and the main worry for anyone seeking employment in The United States. The steep rises in the health care system in America almost contributed to the bankruptcy of the giant car manufacturer General motors. In this example some hard Union negotiations, compromises and the closing down of their finance arm GMAC meant this action wasn’t necessary.
Workers in The United States place this as their number one priority when looking for a potential employer and often will move to a lower paid position just to better their medical care. One answer is to this international issue is improve the general health and fitness of people generally so that this heavy reliance on medical care can be eased.
